First, we use a relay to have a less dangerous circuit.
How does a relay work?
When an electric current passes through the coil it acts like an electromagnet and attracts a movable piece of metal that closes two contacts.
If an electric current doesn't flow through the coil, the central contact stays joined to the contact in the left. Here you have a video which shows this:
In this video we have a different circuit and the relay works in another way:
When we give power to the relay, the central contact moves one time to one of the conctact. When we turn off the battery that gives power to the relay, the central contacts moves to the other contact.
